Trip Planning: Austin Packing List
Main Bag: Deuter Airlite 26L SL
As I mentioned in my review post for this bag, I'm planning on walking along Hadrian's Wall Path this summer. I'm using this trip to Austin as a way to test how this backpack works for airplane travel. I don't think that we'll be walking long distances with it, but I'd like to see if I can fit my packing list in without it feeling too cramped.
Tops
- Athleta magenta tech T-shirt
- Honolua Wahine cotton T-shirt x 3 (wear one in transit)
- Old Navy black long-sleeved shirt (wear in transit)
Since this is a shorter trip, I'm fine with bringing along cotton shirts. I usually wear them more than once without washing them, but I can always give them a quick sink wash to freshen them up. Honolua Wahine is my favorite Hawaiian surfwear brand, and their shirts are super soft and thin without being too sheer. I may buy a new shirt as a souvenir as well.
Bottoms/Dresses
- Tail polyester/spandex blend black pants (wear in transit)
- Champion black shorts
- Ibex wool skort
- Columbia Sportswear black sleeveless travel dress
I'll pack the tops, bottoms, and dresses into a Tom Bihn Packing Cube Shoulder Bag. I don't usually use this as a shoulder bag at my destination, but I do sometimes use it as a clutch or extra carryall.
Underwear/PJs
- Smartwool briefs x 3
- Icebreaker boyshorts x 2 (wear one in transit)
- Playtex bras x 2 (wear one in transit)
- Long tank as nightshirt
Outerwear
- Roxy reversible hoodie
- Gray hoodie
I'm not set on these pieces yet. It's going to be late and cold when we leave for Austin, but the weather in Austin is going to be really warm during the day and cooler at night. I may bring a heavier jacket for the flights instead of one of the hoodies.
Footwear
- Sanuk Yoga Sling 2 sandal
- Allbirds sneakers (wear in transit)
- Cotton socks x 2
- Wool socks x 2 (wear one in transit)
I may cut out the cotton socks, but I like having options. I find the Allbirds extremely comfortable in transit, and the Sanuk sandals work well with both casual and more formal clothes. I haven't tried the Allbirds without socks yet since it's been cold here in the PNW, but I might see how they work on this trip.
Toiletries & Electronics
I pack my toiletries in a Tom Bihn clear organizing pouch and my electronics in a blue Taj brand pouch.
Personal Bag: Sherpani Purse
I love this purse, although I'm not sure it's still in production. It has a flap with magnetic closure that covers the main compartment's zipper, and there are smaller pockets on the outside and a passport pocket on the inside. When I traveled in Europe, I fit a small plastic water bottle (repurposed from a juice container) in the side mesh pocket. The one drawback is that the purse isn't big enough for magazines and snacks for the plane. I often put it inside a packable grocery bag so I have everything I need with me at my seat.
- Cell phone
- Kindle Paperwhite
- Portable charger
- Tom Bihn cork wallet
- Small pouch with lipstick and concealer
- Kleenex
- Keys
- Packable grocery shoulder bag
- Cloth coffee cozy
As I write this, I'm starting to wonder if I need to pare my packing list down even more. If I do, I'll update on what didn't make the cut!
